I know, I know… Suggesting plaids for fall is not exactly earth shattering. In fact, some might say it’s the autumnal equivalent of the infamous “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking” scene from The Devil Wears Prada.

This fall, though, there are so many interesting variations of plaid. We aren’t confined just to the traditional plaid shirt. For instance, we know have clever options like a ruffled plaid top, a drop-waist ruffled hem plaid dress, a zippered popover plaid flannel shirt, and even a plaid beanie!

Wearing Plaid Styling Tip

As you can tell from my outfit, traditional plaid shirts and shirt dresses aren’t dead! Indeed, they are still going strong this season. But they can be easily updated by how you style it.

My favorite styling tip to try with plaid this season is the bandana. Whether you tie it around your neck like a choker necklace or tie it around your wrist as a bracelet, the bandana works perfectly with plaid! My favorite sources for bandanas are J.Crew and Madewell.

A Few Final Notes About My Look

First, did you notice how inexpensive this shirt dress is? For less than $100, I had to pick it up. While the plaid embraces the autumn season, the short sleeves and dress length make it great for this transitional weather in the south.

Next, if you’re looking to do a casual cool plaid look, try at least two of these three accessories: a bandana, a baseball cap, and/or sneakers. If you try this, I guarantee you will feel comfortable and look cool all day!
