The Trend : Long Vests

I’ve been enamored with the idea of a long vest since I first saw Victoria Beckham sporting one back in 2013. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who noticed. For the last few seasons, designers have been creating various versions of these long sleeveless coats. The vest is no longer a piece to be hidden, but one to take center stage.

The long vest offerings are especially aplenty this fall. In case you missed it, you can see our picks for the top 15 long vests this season here.

Why should you invest in this piece as a new wardrobe staple? Here are the top five reasons.

Top 5 Reasons to Try the Trend

 1. It is universally flattering.

The piece naturally creates a long, lean silhouette. Who couldn’t benefit from an extra dose of lengthening? Sign me up.

2. It is the perfect transitional piece.

What is it about fall that makes us automatically start craving layers? If it’s still too warm where you live to fully embrace layers, satisfy that craving with a long vest.

3. It plays well into the popular menswear inspired look.

The almost architectural lines and shape of the vest lend it that masculine suiting vibe. In fact, this silhouette originated in the 1800s as a dress bodice made to look like a men’s coat.

4. It gives you a sophisticated aura.

Given the suiting influence, the well-tailored piece brings refinement, even to a jeans and tee.

5. It can be styled in so many ways.

Here, I wore it over a white tank top and light ripped boyfriend jeans. Soon, I plan to wear it over a black tee and black skinny jeans with leopard accessories.

When the weather turns a bit cooler, I’ll be wearing this with a sweater or turtleneck underneath. If you live in a really cold climate, you can even layer your heavy coat over this in the winter.

Button it, unbutton it, dress it up, dress it down… The options really are endless!

    Gorgeous – as always!

I’ve ordered a So Number One emerald green vest in beautiful lightweight fabric but I’m so worried I won’t be able to wear it ’till next spring, since it’s already pretty cold (+15) in St. Petersburg.

Probably gonna spend a good portion of Sunday evening trying to figure whether I can layer it under/over any of my jackets and coats, haha.

    1. Carrie says:

It’s already getting cold there? Oh no! I laid out by the pool this morning! Ha. It’s still 90 degrees F here. Hugs to you!

  7. Love the vest! It gives the outfit a whole different look!
