Two Ways to Style a Statement Dress

Sure, it’s easy to style a basic little black dress or little white dress or even a denim dress multiple ways. But what about a colorful statement-making sequin stripe dress? Can that be worn different ways? The answer is yes! I’ll show you how, plus tell you how to style it for different occasions.

In fact, can I let you in on a little secret? I’ve personally already worn this cute dress three times in the last week. If that doesn’t prove the versatility, I don’t know what does!

Statement Dress by Day

If you are considering what to wear to a baby shower or what to wear to a wedding shower or what to wear to a spring luncheon, this dress styled casually would be perfect. Sequins are so unexpected by day that this dress is sure to add a fun twist to standard spring event dressing.

I’ve styled this dress casually twice this week. Here’s where I have worn it. First, I wore it to a late afternoon garden cocktail party in Dallas at the annual rewardStyle fashion blogger conference. Then, I again wore this dress on Sunday afternoon to the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Tennis Championship at River Oaks Country Club in Houston.

To make this dress daytime appropriate, I employed these three main styling ideas:

1. Add a cardigan to tone down the sequins.
2. Wear wedges to up the practicality factor for wearing this ensemble outdoors.
3. Top it off with a straw hat to shield yourself from the sun.

 

Statement Dress by Night

Are you not sure what to wear for date night or what to wear to a dinner party this spring? Consider this dress. Appropriately styled, the dress is sure to be a fun and appropriate option for your next evening outing.

Yesterday, I transitioned this dress from the tennis tournament during the day to a charity dinner for the Houston Ballet young professionals group with a few simple styling changes. Here are my top three tips for wearing the dress by night:

1. Swap out the wedges for strappy sandals.
2. Ditch the cardigan. If you need an extra layer of warmth, bring along a simple silk scarf.
3. Change your handbag from a crossbody to a chic clutch.
