Ultra Violet

We say this every year, but truly, this is one of our favorite moments of the year : when Pantone announces the color of the year!

But really, are you surprised?

As a site geared around all things colorful, we get very excited about this, especially when we genuinely love the color.

And that is certainly the case with this one

Everyone say hello to Pantone’s color of the year…

Ultra Violet

Now, we know purple isn’t always thought of as the easiest or most versatile color to wear, but stick with us because we’ll help guide you on this beautiful shade of purple.

According to Pantone, “Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

It’s more than just a color, indeed.

It’s a blue-based purple and it “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.”

And if you look to the streets, you’ll see lots of fashionable women who have already been rocking this purple hue.

Tips on How to Wear Ultra Violet

Now, what you’ve been waiting for… how the heck does one wear ultra violet?

We’ve got you covered.

1. Varying Shades of Purple

Sometimes, more is more. And that is certainly the case with this color. Start with the base of your outfit in the ultra violet shade (which, again, is a blue-based purple). Then add on a lighter violet and lavender, whether by way of other main components of your outfit or simply through accessories. The thing with purple is that it looks really good paired together with various shades.

2. With Red

Now, if you’re going to pair purple with another color (which we’re all about!), start with red. Red and purple just work together. They are bold, they are elegant, and they jive. Again, if you’re not ready to embrace the color in a big way yet, that’s ok. Start with your clutch or a pair of statement earrings.

3. With Neutrals

As well, since it’s a bold shade, pairing it with neutrals not only works, but looks great. Grey, in particular, is beautiful with purple, as well as crisp winter white.

4. Think About The Silhouettes

As with all colors, it’s important to think about silhouettes when wearing a bold one like this. Stick with wearing what looks good on you. If the trending silhouette is flared jeans, for example, and you simply don’t look or feel your best, then don’t wear flared jeans. With bold colors, since they can do all the talking, you don’t have to go too over the top with your silhouettes if you don’t want to. Think clean lines and flattering necklines.

5. Play with Texture and Pattern

A way to jazz up your purple, if you’re feeling a bit too much like Barney the purple dinosaur, is by playing with texture and patterns. Whether it’s tweed, sequins, suede, or velvet, ultra violet is gorgeous with any of those fabrics. And you can also find ultra violet among prints and patterns. So, it’s a way to wear the color differently than just solids.
