The Trend : Denim on Denim

Denim on denim is back with a vengeance! We’ve been seeing denim on denim everywhere this season – on runways, on celebrities, and on the streets. The look, often referred to as a Canadian tuxedo, ends up looking effortless, but actually does require some effort to pull it off in a stylish manner.

Here are four simple tips to help.

1. Ease into the trend

Not quite ready for the full-on double blue look? Ease into it with different colors of denim. Here, I’ve tried a blue and white combo. You could also pair chambray and black , although I do prefer white for the fresh look of white for the summer.

2. Distress your duds

For some reason, distressed pieces work especially well with this look. The rips and the frayed edges give the look a cool, edgy vibe that might otherwise be missing from the pairing. That’s why I loved the idea of this frayed denim top with ripped denim jeans.

3. Dress up the denim

Denim is by nature a casual fabric. So, when you’ve paired two denim pieces, plus perhaps added some distressing, the look is very casual. Dress it up with heels, a bold bag, a red lip, or a statement jewelry piece. These dressy details will elevate the entire look.

Bonus tip: If you’re planning you’re Fourth of July outfit, this could be the perfect opportunity to add a pop of red to this blue and white ensemble.

4. Strategically use shades

This is key when mixing denim shades: Always remember that darker shades are slimming, while lighter shades and white draw attention to body parts. In this case, the white jeans draw attention to the legs, whereas if you’d rather draw attention to your upper body, maybe go for a lighter wash denim top.

I had to giggle about the Canadian Tuxedo — according to the Internet (that reliable source), Bing Crosby was the first to sport that stylish trend 🙂
