A Friend is Someone Who Knows the Song

Words of Wisdom

by Julie Weinstein

As we all know, friendships are oh so good for the soul. That’s not to discount parent-child relationships or romantic relationships or any other type of relationships, but friendships are incredibly special and important in their own right. Very special and important, indeed.

Friendships are two way streets, and in order for a true one to last, both sides must do their part. Of course I’m not trying to make this sound like a job, but in all reality, all relationships take work.

So, what makes a good friend?

This can certainly be seen as subjective, but here is a list of things that likely hold true to most friendships.

One who listens

One who cares

One who is authentic

One who is there for the other person, no questions asked

One who not only laughs with you, but cries with you, too

One who is honest with you

One who is loyal

One who isn’t there for only a reason or season, but a lifetime

One who respects you

…and much more.

A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and will sing it back to you when you forget the words.

It’s never a bad time to take a look around at your friendships and feel grateful and share your gratitude with them. It’s also not a bad idea to every now and then look around and see if any of your friendships are no longer serving you. A friend should lift you higher, not make you feel less than.

At the end of the day, friends are the family you choose. Choose wisely and care deeply.
