An Exclusive Interview with Jordana Warmflash of Novis on Her Spring 2018 Collection
As I mentioned last week, I didn’t attend NYFW this year, but I certainly tuned into all the shows and presentations. I always love “fashion month” because it truly is a celebration of fashion and style! It’s exciting to see what these talented designers create and bring to life.
One of my favorite collections to follow the past few years has been Novis, which is a NYC based brand, run by sisters Jordana and Gillian Warmflash. With its downtown meets uptown vibe, every piece is equally stylish, sophisticated, and modern. Each season they come out with such beautiful designs, and their Spring 2018 is certainly no exception. We especially adore their unique take on florals. Simply stunning! We’ve shared some of my favorite looks above, and my three favorites are Look 15, Look 19, Look 25. Q&A with Jordana Warmflash of Novis
What was your inspiration behind this collection?
My inspiration for this collection was antique botanical drawings. I looked to move the floral theme of the last two seasons forward into the enchanting world of the jungle.
What’s your favorite piece from the collection and why?
It’s hard to pick, but I think I’ll go with Look 5 – the drop-waist side-tie dress. It’s not super dramatic, but it’s quintessential Novis in so many ways, combining a custom print and color with a new silhouette for us that will be flattering on a range of body types. It feels great to wear.
What do you think will be a huge trend for Spring 2018?
Lilac! It’s showing up in a number of collections, including ours, specifically in a shirt dress, wide leg pants, and embellished cocktail dress.
We love your unique take on florals for the season – what are your thoughts on print mixing? What advice would you give to someone wanting to do so?
Print mixing is great! It brings liveliness to an outfit, and to the woman wearing it. I recommend mixing a bolder print with a softer one, so they complement and highlight each other, rather than compete.
When you’re designing your collections, who is the person you’re designing for?
Novis is named for my paternal grandmother, Gwen Novis, who was a happy, confident go-getter who appreciated the power and energy of pattern and texture. She’s my inspiration, and it’s women like her that I design for.
