On Being Busy

Words of Wisdom

“How are you? How are things?”

“Oh my gosh, so so busy!!”

How often is this an exchange between you and your friend / family member / colleague?

I’d go out on a limb and say very often!

And why?

Well, there are tons of ideas on why the increasing “busyness” is apparent, but since when did being busy become a badge of honor?

And I get it. Life is crazy! With the onslaught of social media, the years flying faster than ever, and, quite simply, the ins and outs of the day to day, we are, in fact, busy!

It just seems that there has become a negative connotation with being busy. More like “Ugh, I’m so busy” rather than “Things are so great and busy!”

Granted, this doesn’t apply to every single person out there, but I think we can all agree that being busy has become, dare I say, trendy.

Don't confuse being busy with living your life.

And there is truly nothing wrong with being busy. Heck, I thrive on being busy at times! However, the issue can arise when all we do is go, go, go without taking a break and stopping and truly appreciating this life and living this life in which we’re given.

There’s a difference between living your life and feeling the life in which you live while living it. Living your life can oftentimes translate to just going through the motions and coasting along. But you don’t want to look back on your life having had just gone through the motions, right?

And if we get so busy that we forgot to stop and actually enjoy our busyness, well then what the heck are we all doing here?

Life is for not just living, but also for enjoying, for feeling, and for making the most out of everyday (even on the not so great days).

So next time your friend asks how you are, try answering with something other than busy!

And remember to take some time every single day to look around at this crazy amazing journey we call life.
