Motherhood Moments : Insights for Moms at Every Stage with Babi Ahluwalia

Continuing with our motherhood series in honor of Mother's Day coming up...

Motherhood Moments

Hey there – ladies. Welcome to the third installment of our Motherhood Moments series. What I am already discovering as a mother is that kids change so quickly! As soon as you start to get accustomed to one stage, they are on to the next stage. So, motherhood is always a learning and growing process.

With that in mind, this motherhood series is meant to share insights from mothers at different stages of life and parenting. First, Ashley Rose of Sugar & Cloth shared her thoughts on being a first-time mom to a newborn while running her own business. Next, Lindsay Teague Moreno shared her thoughts on being a wildly successful entrepreneur and businesswoman while raising three young girls.

And today, we have the lovely, delightful, and talented Babi Ahluwalia, one half of the talented husband-wife design team behind the exquisite fashion brand Sachin & Babi. Over the past handful of years, I have come to know and love Babi, particularly for the way she handles life with such poise and grace and beauty and elegance. Keep reading for her thoughts on parenting.

An Interview with Babi Ahluwalia of Sachin & Babi

Tell us about your family! How old are you children?

I have two girls, Rhea is 15 and Tara is 12.

What’s your favorite part about being a mother?

I am not just living for me, I have a greater purpose in life, and raising two beautiful strong girls.

What have you found the most challenging? And how have you overcome it?

The balancing act of being a working mum and being there for your children, not just physically but emotionally. I overcome this by meditating every morning, talking to my girl friends and being honest about my mothering skills and learning from other mothers.

What would your perfect day with your family look like? Walk us through it.

My perfect day would be on a boat, if money was no object, in the Mediterranean, or if it be cheap and cheerful I would do it in the Atlantic out east, swim, enjoy the water, enjoy good food, good music, share stories, live in the moment and enjoy my family.

When you were younger did you always know you wanted children? If not, at what point did you decide so?

I think I have always wanted children but I think something happened to me after 9/11. I fell pregnant that year. On a human level it seemed to awaken some kind of nesting instinct within me.

In what ways have you seen your children take on your mannerisms and traits?

They are both really strong and funny. I hate to admit it, but they are smarter than I was at their age and they are impatient like me.

What do you think is the most important piece of advice you could pass down to your children?

If they listen to me, then I would like them to be kind to one another and get along with each other. Not to worry as much and don’t stress about being liked. To be confident in themselves and to live their truth!

For someone running their own business while balancing motherhood, what would be your biggest piece of advice for them?

It’s a tough act, surround yourself with really good people, learn to delegate, and be kind to yourself because it’s not an easy job!
