Preface
Hi there, readers. Carrie here… You are in for a special treat today: a guest post from my sister Kelli! Kelli has such a natural knack for effortless style. Our styles couldn’t be more different, but yet I draw so much style inspiration from her. I hope you do as well! Without further adieu, please enjoy her fall neutral picks… I know I’ll be doing some shopping based on her recommendations!
Oh, and if you want more neutral tips and love, check out our post, 3 Tips for Making Neutrals Interesting.
Thoughts on Fall Fashion + Neutrals
written by Kelli Colbert
Hello, Wear + Where + Well readers! I’m Kelli, Carrie’s (younger) sister. Today, we’ll take a veer off the colorful path of Carrie and delve into two of my favorites in life: my unrequited love for fall + neutral colored clothing.
While some people (like my sister) get giddy about the newness of the spring season, for me and my inner Scorpio: it is and always has been fall. To me, there is something so comforting and a bit romantic about cooler temperatures, foliage changing colors, and neutral, cozy layers and sweaters.
Truth be told, I’ve always gravitated toward neutral colors. Black, navy, camel, cream, white, gray – these are my absolute favorites. Vince, Rag & Bone, Splendid, James Perse just get it with neutral knockouts.
And when I need splash of color, Carrie’s closet sure comes in handy 😉
My Off-Duty Fall Style
In the meantime, my off-duty fall style consists mainly of these elements:
- A great pair of skinny jeans: I always invest in a great pair or two each season. They’re so classic + last for years + certainly get ample use! The high waisted Citizens of Humanity pair in black are soft and stretchy, yet have a structure to hug you in all the right places.
- A lightweight sweater: These are perfect for transition-like temperatures we have in Texas. The classic Trouve option comes in multiple neutral colors. For a splurge with some flair, Rag & Bone can do no wrong with their Eunice pullover – layer it with a Splendid tank top for day or a chic Cosabella bralette for the evening.
- Booty Booty Booties : I live for some booties, y’all. In fact, Rag & Bone booties are fall requisites. If you don’t own a pair, they are truly life changing for your fall wardrobe. This year, they’ve added some sassy suede bows. Rebecca Minkoff and Jeffrey Campbell offer some open toe options full of personality at about half the price of Rag & Bone.
- Wrap Coats: Wrap coats give me life. DVF made a reversible wrap coat that cinches at the waist and makes my heart skip a beat.

Bonus Tip
Lastly, to really make it feel like fall, pre heat your oven and bake some pumpkin bread! Williams Sonoma Pumpkin Bread is officially back on their site, with or without gluten: #options. To personalize my loaves, I’ll toss in some Ghiradelli dark chocolate chips or some Justin’s Maple almond butter and call it semi-homemade: #domestic.
What’s on your fall radar? We’d love to know. Tell us in the comments!
