***Update from Carrie: read our latest article about Neutrals, 18 Neutrals on Our Radar for Fall, written by my adorable sister Kelli.

3 Tips for Making Neutrals Interesting

When it comes to clothes, many people are afraid of bold colors. On the other hand, I myself am afraid of neutrals. I guess I fear to look too plain or boring. I’m not interested in blending in. I like for my style to have personality!

As this fall season has descended upon us, though, I’ve felt strangely drawn to neutrals. The first inkling of that can be seen here when I donned the beautiful camel long vest by Alexander Wang.

Since then, I’ve been thinking a lot about neutrals… Despite my colorful tendencies, neutrals have a lot to offer. They are classic and versatile. Neutrals tend to outlive trends. They are the building blocks of a wardrobe, effectively serving as multipliers by allowing one to mix and match pieces with ease.

So, how I can incorporate them into my fashion while still being true to my personal style? Here are three ideas I find myself embracing.

1. Turn to texture

Texture is one of the most interesting elements to play with when creating a look. The cozy knit of this sweater creates a nice juxtaposition with the slimming diagonal lines of the jeans. Plus, the hat has feather trim, while the boots are made of a hair-like material. Even the Chanel purse has a quilted texture to it. Each piece has its own unique texture.

2. Mix materials

Not only can you mix materials, but consider mixing different neutrals. Cream, camel, and denim are all mixed in this look. Neutrals by definition effectively blend with other colors, including each other. An all-neutral look doesn’t have to mean monochrome.

3. Play with print

A dash of print can keep things playful. Even with an all-neutral palette, prints can help you add that extra kick to the look. In my case, I added print through the fawn print of the boots.

With those tips in mind, I’ve curated a number of other interesting neutral options to help you replicate this look. Options vary by style and price point. There is a unique twist to every item I’ve included. Enjoy browsing!

  14. I have stayed away from neutrals for years (except from grey which could be assimilated to a neutral, no ?). I always thought that you need to be a little tanned and have a sunny weather to wear those tones well.
But you are so right and it feels so cosy and comfy with these kind of pairings … So, for winter I will have a white jeans, with my favs Sergio Rossi boots in camel, a loose camel knit …. A sleeveless jacket in sheepskin will complete the look ? What do you think ? Xoxo
