Gingham on Gingham
Gingham, the lightweight check-patterned cotton cloth, seems to make an appearance every summer. And that summer surge in gingham is for good reason. The breathable, airy fabric with its crisp checks gives a preppy, cool vibe. But this summer, gingham seems to be more popular than ever! I first shared the gingham trend with you this spring in this edition of Friday Favorite Finds, featuring twenty gingham items to wear. Well, let’s revisit this trend for summer, amping the trend up a notch by wearing gingham on gingham!
For my look, I decided to double the impact by doubling the gingham patterns. While I totally fell in love with this summer dress (on sale here!), I knew I needed an outer layer for those chilly temperatures inside air-conditioned spaces. Rather than reach for my go-to denim jacket, I went for something a little less expected: a crinkled button up gingham shirt (also on sale here!).
As you can tell, neither the colors or the pattern are an exact match between the dress and the shirt, but that’s what makes it interesting! Gingham is one of the easiest prints to mix because of its simple shape. Here are two simple tips for mixing gingham:
- Start with a common color thread – Again, colors do not need to match perfectly. In fact, it’s better if they don’t. But be sure to have one unifying color or at least pick pieces with colors from the same color family.
- Play with proportions – Add interest by combining a large-scale gingham print with a small-scale gingham print.

In closing, how about some gingham trivia? Did you know that gingham originated in Malaysia and was called genggang? Did you know Marilyn Monroe was photographed wearing a pair of cropped gingham pants in 1953? Did you know Brigitte Bardot wore a pink gingham wedding dress in 1959, causing a nationwide shortage in France? Read these fun facts and more in The Gingham Index by J.Crew.

Hi Carrie,
Some very fun looks.
I really like that OPI nail polish too. Can’t Find My Czechbook:)
Thanks, Sheri. And great deals too!
Don’t you just love the OPI names? I’m still in love with ‘gelato on my mind’, but needed a slight change. So I went with this darker shade of blue – ‘can’t find my czechbook’. 🙂
Love this super fun gingham look!

Well thank you, Bryn! It looked great on you, too.
I think Gingham, I (tend to) think picnics and tablecloth. Yet, I must confess, Gingham has reached a somewhat high end feel of late, and I must also confess that you look picture perfect in this double play look 🙂
I hear ya… It can be a little country and cliche. But I like to think it can look a bit more modern with the proper styling.
Thanks for stopping by!
