Novelty Jeans
We know jeans aren’t anything new. In fact, jeans date back to 1873! They are, indeed, a staple in most wardrobes. Many ladies love jeans, contending they go with everything, can be dressed both up and down, and are timeless. And there are endless styles of jeans, of course, from straight leg to skinny to boyfriend and everything in between – seemingly something for everyone!
However, I have to admit that historically I’ve not been a jeans person. In fact, just a few short years ago, my business colleagues would sometimes ask me, “Do you even own any jeans?!” We were permitted to wear jeans to the office on Fridays under the “casual Friday” dress code, but I never did. That was partly because I believe in dressing for the job you want, not the job you have (as mentioned in my style tips for women in business) and partly just because I wasn’t a huge fan of jeans. Admittedly, I found plain ol’ jeans a bit boring.
But a jeans trend I can get on board with is the novelty jeans trend.
What are novelty jeans, you might ask? Well, I kind of coined the term myself to basically encompass all sorts of embellished (i.e., non-boring!) jeans. We are talking way beyond distressed tears and rips in your jeans. We are talking pearls, bows, studs, florals, fringe, and more!
Now, keep on reading for seven ways to spice up your jeans by way of these different styles, including how I’m wearing them, as well as stylish women whom I admire!
7 Types of Novelty Jeans
1. Bow Embellished Jeans
This outfit might be my favorite jeans look ever! I think we can all agree it’s signature more color, please! style. Right?! In fact, you might remember seeing illustrated it in our shop. Bows on jeans could be the greatest thing ever, if you ask us. It adds the sweetest touch to a casual pair of denim. I love that juxtaposition of feminine bows with more masculine denim. Bonus points if the bows on your jeans are rainbow colored bows! On the right you can see how Blair paired hers with more neutral colors for a perfect fall look.
2. Floral Embellished Jeans
With a nod back to the 70s, floral inspired denim have made quite the comeback. And we’re very much into it, especially all the fabulous Alice + Olivia styles! Whether skinny leg or bell bottoms, you can’t deny the cool factor that is floral embroidery and patchwork. On the left is more of an edgy look with the rocker tee and on the right we’re loving the florals on florals.
3. Fringe
You might have noticed me going all in with fringe jeans recently in this look and this look. They truly are so fun – and surprisingly versatile! I dressed them up with a nicer blouse, and I also dressed them down with a t-shirt. You’ll find fringe typically on the bottom cuff of jeans, but also going down the legs on either side. Either way, we’re on board! As you’ll see in the right photo, denim fringe is also a big trend right now, so if that’s more your speed you’ll find tons of styles out there showing this denim on denim adornment.
4. Pearl Embellished Jeans
Again, we love the contrast and juxtaposition of classic pearls on casual denim. It’s unexpected in the best way possible. One might not immediately think of wearing pearls on their jeans, but as you can see, it’s such a great look. I have paired them with sneakers, with pops of red, and with blush pink lace. And we love how Silvia also paired hers with blush.
7. Studded Jeans
Rocker vibes all around with studded jeans! It’s a great style to juxtapose with a more tailored shirt. Find studs all over denim or just in a few places. I paired mine with a bold striped sweater (look coming soon to the site!) and the other gals (center / right) above you’ll notice they are paired with button down shirts. What a great look, indeed.
